Change is in the Air

Earth changes, but thy soul and God stand sure.
-Robert Browning
Please join us in celebrating with Sarah Kelley as she will be joining the Water of Life Ministries staff as their Communications Director.  Although she was not looking to make a career switch, we believe that our God is a creative God, and sometimes unexpected doors are opened to us.  Water of Life exists to meet people’s most basic physical need: the need for clean, disease-free water while taking the Gospel of Jesus and church planting in West Africa and India.  Sarah is excited to have the opportunity to use her skills and talents while still serving God.
As most of you know, I am both a camper and summer staff alumnus.  It has been my great honor and privilege to serve the camping ministry that did so much to shape the person I have become for the past eight years.  The amount of growth I’ve seen in my time on staff has been incredible, and I know God will continue to do big things.  I’m looking forward to watching it as I transition from staff member to camp’s biggest cheerleader. – Sarah
We are also excited to welcome Paige Railey as our new Director of Marketing and Communications.  Paige graduated with an Art degree from Lander University and has spent the last year as a teacher.  She also has a deep love of Asbury Hills and has served as a summer counselor, photo/video staff, and by sharing the ministry through church visits. We are very excited to see how God is going to work through her as a part of the Camp & Retreat Ministries staff.
Please join us in prayer for Sarah, Paige, and the ministries they serve as we make this transition.

Introducing Summer Camp Pastor Ken

So far you’ve met Laura-Allen, John Luke, Andrew, Terry, Laurie, Scott, and Sarah.  We’re down to just a week and a day before summer camp 2016 begins, but there are still two pastors you need to meet.  So here’s ten questions to help you get to know camp pastor Ken.253884_10150612303855696_1804932_n

  1. What is your favorite superhero?
Batman.  How can you not love a super hero that doesn’t really have any super powers but just works really hard (and has fun toys!)
  2. If you could have any superpower what would it be?
My super power would be Time Travel.  It isn’t normally considered a super power but think of all the crime you could stop without hurting anyone if you could just travel back in time and change the past. But then again, would they have committed the crime in the first place? Whoa… Mindblown.
  3. Have you played any sports?
I played sports… when I was 10.  But no I am just a huge sports fan.  Being from Detroit, I mostly love baseball, hockey, and football.  That’s right, I am a lonely Detroit Lions fan. Maybe next year…
  4. What are you hobbies?
For hobbies, I love to work around the house, either doing landscaping stuff or fixing something inside. I always love having a project to work on like installing something new in the house or church, building something, or just fixing something broken.
  5. Favorite movie?
My favorite move of all time is Back to the Future.  Really the whole trilogy—you can’t really separate them as they all continuously flow into the next one. I dare you to try to stem me with a Back to the Future trivia question!

    Family

  6. Favorite vacation spot?
It may sound so cliche, but my favorite vacation destination is Disney World in Florida.  My family has had a few vacations there and I just love everything about it! It was especially enjoyable to see my little boys light up as we first entered the Magic Kingdom.
  7. If you had to live off one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Pizza.  I am your typical youth pastor, and love pizza.  I could (and almost have tried, except my wife wouldn’t let me) eat pizza for every meal.
  8. Favorite TV show?
My favorite TV show has been LOST.  I loved the weird stories and master surrounding the island—as well as the aspect that felt like time travel. If you ask me, I loved the way it ended!
  9. Favorite childhood memory?
Most of my childhood memories revolve around my older sister—like when she kicked me in the eye, or threw a dart into my arm, or put her hand through a glass window. Actually It sounds like I had a pretty painful past!  But growing up in the church, I actually have great memories of great experiences I have had. One of my favorite things as a teenager was going to a Christian Music festival, Ichthus, in Wilmore, Kentucky every year with my youth group. The community that developed as you spend a week tent camping together was amazing! I cherish every memory from my time growing up in youth group.
  10. What are you most looking forward to about your time at Asbury Hills?
There are many things that excite me about coming to Asbury Hills! Being a northern boy from Detroit, I am sure looking forward to some southern accents and cooking…and the sweet tea! Also, I cannot wait for the times of worship with my friend Paul Schloss. But most of all, I look forward to seeing God show up in huge ways and making an impacting life change in many of the students! My prayer is that this will be one of those memories you will hold on to for the rest of your trek through life!

Introducing Family Camp Pastor Laurie Brandes

Some of you may be aware that Family Camp is one of my very favorite camps we offer.  The research is overwhelming that time together as a family is shrinking, and I firmly believe in the importance of just being together.  Family Camp is a great opportunity to do just that.  We’ll provide the lodging, the food, and the fun.  All you have to do is bring your family!  And we’re willing to bet that after a weekend of worship, fellowship, relaxation, and fun – you’ll leave Asbury Hills a different family than you arrive.

We are also excited that this summer, Laurie Brandes, will be serving as our Family Camp Pastor.  She is the Independent Living Director at Epworth Children’s Home, a board member for South Carolina Camps & Retreat Ministries, and Asbury Hills enthusiast.  Here are 10 questions to help you get to know her too:

Introducing Summer Camp Pastor Sarah

So we let you know Monday that we are changing things up this summer, and introduced you to Pastor Laura-Allen.  (Missed that?  Click here.)  Today, we are excited to introduce you to another one who may look a little familiar: Meet Sarah.  Sarah is a former camper, CIT, and staff member.  She’s basically awesome and currently serves as the Youth Director at New Beginnings UMC in Spartanburg.  Here’s 10 questions so you can get to know her too.

Sarah 3

What is your favorite superhero?
Superman… need I say more?!

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Flying! But not with wings, I’m way to clumsy to have to deal with more appendages.

Have you played any sports?
YES! Swimming, volleyball and softball.  Softball is my favorite!

Favorite movie?
The Princess Bride!! “Mawage! Mawage is what bwings us togeva todayyyy.”

What are you hobbies?
Playing guitar, singing, watching or playing any sports, spending time with friends, watching movies, singing Disney songs in character.

Favorite vacation spot?
Actual vacation probably Amelia Island in Florida. Dream vacation…. Yellowstone to go camping!

Sarah 4

If you had to live off one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
SOUR PATCH KIDSSSSS!!! (inner child answer) Pasta (somewhat older inner child answer)

Favorite TV show?
Parks and Recreations

Favorite childhood memory?
Being a camper, then CIT, then summer staffer at Asbury Hills. Not just because that’s a good cheesy answer but because that’s where my relationship with the Lord really began when I was a kid, where it was fostered as a CIT and where it grew even deeper roots as a staff member. I have almost 15 years of memories and all of them are very special.

What are you most looking forward to about your time at Asbury Hills?
I’m looking forward getting to speak to kids about what a relationship with Christ looks like.  I’m normally singing and playing music in worship but now I get to actually speak about it and that’s so exciting to me.  Also, I’m just excited to be back at camp with new staff members and new kids experiencing camp for the first time.

Introducing Summer Camp Pastor Laura-Allen

We’re changing things up a little this summer.  Instead of having one pastor to serve and lead all summer, we will be offering a rotation of pastors – each serving a week.  We are excited about the perspectives and energy this will bring to our summer and are ready to introduce them to you!

Meet Pastor Laura-Allen.  She will serving Asbury Hills June 19-14 and currently serves as the associate pastor at Advent UMC in Simpsonville.  Here’s 10 questions so you can get to know her too:

2015-06-08 21.52.09

What is your favorite superhero?
I love The Incredibles. Let’s go with Violet.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Well Violet has both invisibility and can make a force field that is both protective and able to move heavy things. Any of that would be awesome, but I probably most want to be able to fly.

Have you played any sports?
I was a swimmer growing up through high school. I played a lot of ultimate frisbee in college. Now I run.

Favorite movie?
 Remember the Titans

What are you hobbies?
I am an extrovert, so I’m generally up for anything that involves hanging out with other people. I’m a sports fan regardless of who is playing, and I am a proud supporter of all Clemson athletics. On my own I enjoy cooking, reading, and watching Netflix.

IMG_3538
Favorite vacation spot?
Probably my favorite place in the world is a small town called Tarpum Bay on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. I have been on three mission trips there, made lifelong relationships, and basked in the beauty of God’s creation. In terms of vacations, every summer I go stay with my second family who lives in Beaufort. It is one of my favorite weeks of the year.

If you had to live off one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Does food also include beverages? I am not sure I could live without coffee. Assuming coffee is not off limits, probably cheese.

Favorite TV show?
Friends

Favorite childhood memory?
One summer when I was 9 or 10 years old, we rented a house on a lake in New Hampshire. Our cousins rented the house next door. Nearly 20 years later, we still talk about that week at the lake.

What are you most looking forward to about your time at Asbury Hills?
I don’t think there is anything I am not looking forward to. I was a camp counselor in college at another camp, so I am excited to get to know all of the Asbury Hills counselors this summer and their campers. I love to hike and be outside, so that will be great. I’m also giddy about the chance to go down the zip line and the water slide.
