From the Summer Staff: Allie R.

“This summer, campers taught me more about worship than my ministry classes ever will.”

–Allie R.

Allie is in the middle with her hand up.

You may recognize Allie from our videos and photos as the girl behind the keyboard and microphone. Allie served as the Worship Coordinator for Summer 2018 after serving on the worship team in Summer 2017.  We are so excited to feature Allie on our blog today and we know you are going to love what she has to say.

“This summer I had the pleasure of serving Asbury Hills as its Worship Coordinator. I saw this as an incredible opportunity to serve God, live out my life calling of music ministry, and spend another three months at my absolute favorite place on Earth.

I am a Christian Worship Major at Indiana Wesleyan University, and I was ecstatic to use all I was learning in my worship classes at school to lead the staff and campers at Asbury Hills in authentic, biblical worship.  I believe, however, that those campers left more of an impression on me as to what it means to authentically and whole heartily worship God, than I ever would have expected. Instead of teaching, I often found myself as the one learning.

During Week 8, a few new activities were added to the groups’ schedules to mix things up a bit. One of those activities was titled “Band Time”. During this time, we would typically write a short song with each group. These songs brought out a lot of silliness and laughter from both the campers and the band.

One morning, as we met with an elementary group for Band Time, we realized this group was still in the middle of their morning devotion time. I sat down with the group and was surprised to hear the questions they were asking their counselors. Their devotion time, which typically lasts twenty minutes, lasted over an hour as these campers were trying to wrap their minds around a theology adults still don’t fully grasp. As they finished, we only had about thirty minutes left for Band Time. The band began to set up to write a song as we had with every other group but as we were getting into place, one girl asked this of us:

“Is it okay if we just worship together?”

Her question was quickly followed by affirmation from her fellow campers. We, of course, were not going to deny them the chance to worship together. I spent the next thirty minutes in one of the most spirit-filled, authentic, and powerful worship settings I had ever experienced. So powerful that some of the campers were moved to tears.

In Mark 10:14-15, Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly, I tell you, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Through this experience, I truly believe I saw a glimpse into the Kingdom of God. Those campers will never know how much they taught me about worship, and my view on what it means to purely worship God will never be the same.

So to those campers: thank you for showing me that I will never be done learning how to worship, and please never lose the passion you have to ask the difficult questions and worship without concern of the world around you. You are binging the kingdom of God to Earth.”

–Allie R.

Fall Festival 2018

Our Fall Festival 2018 was great fun, even if the weather wasn’t favorable! We enjoyed sharing Asbury Hills with everyone who joined us. Check out some photos from the day and stay tuned for a video!

Fall Festival is an annual event here at Asbury Hills and we absolutely look forward to it each year! It always seems to end up falling on the weekend where the season of fall really makes itself known. The leaves start changing colors, the air get a little more crisp and the smell of apple cider filling the air really makes for a great Fall Festival!

As always, a huge thanks to our wonderful Summer Staffers for helping make Fall Festival 2018 a huge success!

Cooking Up Something New

We are so excited to introduce our new Food Services Director, Travis Johnson! He comes to us from the small town of Happy, Texas and we are so HAPPY he has joined our Asbury Hills Camp & Retreat Center family!

The Johnson Family outside their new home at Asbury Hills.

Travis and his wife, Trina, have been married for 11 years.  They have three children: Corben, Cannon, and Courtney. They are from Lebanon, Tennessee which is just 25 minutes east of Nashville. In Lebanon, Travis and Trina own and operated three restaurants, a food truck, and a catering company while working as the food service director for their local church. Why did Travis decide to go into the camping world? He says that he “loves seeing smiling faces enjoying great food and fellowshipping together around the table!”

How did Travis get into food service? We asked and he told!

“I started in food service at a young age through our church back at home and quickly realized it wasn’t just a job for me but a passion.”

Travis and his family are coming from a large camp in Happy, Texas where Travis served as the Food Services Director.

How did Travis and his family end up at Asbury Hills?

“The door opened up for me to join the Asbury Hills family and it instantly seemed like a great fit for me and my family. Being at Asbury brings us closer to family and the beautiful mountains, what more could one ask for?”

Travis and his wife, Trina.

If Travis and Trina aren’t at camp, you can find them at church. Trina enjoys volunteering with the children ministries and leading small groups. Travis and his family also enjoy being in involved in the community events and supporting local restaurants.
