Asbury Hills Construction Update

Ready for some good news? Crews are still working very hard on our NEW pool, NEW pool house, and sport courts. Would you like to see the progress so far?

cover photo

We are so thankful that construction has been able to continue at Asbury Hills. Of course, the safety of the construction crew is the most important thing. While our gates are closed to guests, they are still able to safely continue work on this project.

As you may remember, we announced back in September that we were moving forward with Phase 1 of the Asbury Hills Master Plan. You can read that full post here but to briefly summarize, we got approval from our board to start construction on Phase 1.

This means that we were able to start preparing the site for the new pool, new pool house, and sport courts along with the demolition of the old pool. While there have been quite a few rain days that have put a delay on construction, progress is still being made!

This photo was taken during the preparation process for construction.

As of March 28, 2020:

This photo was taken from above the cabins. You’ll notice the top of the Creekview Center (formerly known as the Rec Shelter) at the right towards the top. You’ll also notice that you can sort of see the Dining Hall through the trees in the top of the photo and to the left.

Framing for the Pool House and new pool are in place! This photo was taken from over the Creekview Center.

Bring Camp Home: Hobo Dinner

Here we are with another way to bring camp home during this time of uncertainty. Bringing camp home can help distract and encourage your family and we are here to help! Need a fun, family dinner idea? Check this out!

cover photo

At Asbury Hills, our campers (older elementary-senior high aged) spend a night camping out. We call this ‘Home-In-The-Woods’ or HIW. Groups hike out to a campsite on property, set up sleeping quarters, collect fire wood and begin preparing their meal. This is a huge bonding time for groups and tons of memories always come out of this experience. One favorite among campers and summer staffers is the meal–Hobos. This meal is super easy to prepare. So easy that you can do it at home!

The Ritter family, summer camp pros for sure, took the time to prepare this meal this weekend. They also shared some photos and gave us permission to share with you all!

How cool?! And chances are, you already have some of these ingredients at home. Here is the recipe card–feel free to screenshot and save for later.

As always, if you want to share photos of your family and how you all #BringCampHome, be sure to tag us so we can see!

Bring Camp Home

These next few weeks are already feeling very different than what we are used to. Here are a few things you can do at home that may help bring some joy to your day and truly #BringCampHome.

cover photo

We hope these are a few ways you can bring camp home to your family. We hope it helps you #BringCampHome.

Sing a favorite Asbury Hills blessing before meals.

Some of our favorites are Superman and Johnny Appleseed.

Check out our YouTube channel to watch videos from last summer.

Maybe you’ll see a sneak peak of one of our 2020 Camp Pastors.

Pull out your camper’s devotion booklet from last summer and work your way through it again.

Visit our website for an overview of what you can expect for Summer 2020 at Asbury Hills.

Play some games or riddles your campers learned at Asbury Hills!

Ask your camper to teach you Green Glass Door or Tail Tag (maybe you can find something to use as a tail around your house).

Build a fire in a fire pit outside or your fireplace inside and roast marshmallows with your campers. (Add Graham Crackers and chocolate for the best s’more ever!)

Pro tip: Let the marshmallow roast slow instead of scorching it right away. This makes it perfectly gooey!

Listen to your camper’s favorite songs from worship at camp.

Search Hillsong, Bethel Worship or Sadie Hawkin’s Dance on YouTube.

Take turns sharing good memories at Asbury Hills.

Ask your campers what their favorite activities were and why. Maybe try asking them what they learned while at Asbury Hills.

Ask your camper to teach you their favorite energizers! (These are silly songs we sing before every meal at camp.)

We hope these are some fun things you can do with your extra time at home. If you happen to try any of these ideas and post photos or videos to your social media, tag us! We would LOVE to see what you are up to. Feel free to use the hashtag #BringCampHome.

If you have Instagram, keep an eye out for our stories to update. You may see some familiar faces there! Instagram stories do expire after 24 hours so we will be sure to save them for you to reference later.

Please know we are constantly praying for our camp family and working hard to continue our plans for Summer 2020. For a full update on how COVID-19 is impacting Asbury Hills, click here.

Sponsor a Staffer

Sarah, our Summer Camp Director, is working to finish hiring our summer staffers who will spend the summer pouring into our campers. Are you interested in supporting them?!

sponsor a staffer

Summer at Asbury Hills is less than 100 days away! This means that we are knee deep in putting the final touches on Summer 2020 and preparing for our campers. This is where we need your help. Would you be willing to pray for and support a summer staffer? Would you be willing to send them notes of encouragement throughout the summer? This is exactly what we ask of our summer staff sponsors.

What does it mean to sponsor a staffer? Who can sponsor a staffer? Does it cost anything? Why should you sponsor a staffer?

Your answers are here!

What does it mean to sponsor a staffer?

This simply means that you are volunteering to pray for and support a summer staffer (or more than one.) You are agreeing to keep them in your prayers throughout the summer. We also encourage our sponsors to send their staffer little notes of encouragement throughout the summer. There are few things more exciting than getting fun mail while working at camp!

Who can sponsor a staffer?

This is open to anyone! We like to have folks who already have a relationship with Asbury Hills because you understand our mission. Whether you are a camper or staffer, have a camper or staffer at Asbury Hills or know someone who went to Asbury Hills, we would love for you to volunteer! We have had Sunday School classes, small groups, couples, groups of friends, and individuals sign up to sponsor. This is really open to anyone!

Why should you sponsor a staffer?

We encourage folks to sponsor a staffer to show support to our summer staff. These folks spend the summer pouring into our campers and ensuring that they have the best summer camp experience possible. Can you imagine how encouraging it would be to know that someone outside of our gates was praying for you? Our staff truly appreciate it.

How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing. We do not charge sponsors to support our staff. However, you are always more than welcome and encouraged to make a donation in honor of your staffer.

When will I know who I am sponsoring?

As soon as all of our staff arrive at Asbury Hills and begin training, you will start hearing from Paige, our Marketing & Communications Director. Once staff arrive, we can have them fill out a small info sheet which allows us to give you some information about your staffer. This will include their favorite color, snack, candy, hobbies, etc. Once they fill out the sheet and we can compile it, Paige will send you an email with details on your staffer.

How are staffers assigned to sponsors?

Randomly! When you fill out the Google Form to sign up, you can select if you’d prefer to have a staffer assigned to you or if you’d prefer to pick yours. If you selected to have one assigned to you, they are paired randomly. If you request a certain person, we do our best to fulfill those requests as it will be done on a first come first serve basis.

How often should I send a letter or note of encouragement? What about care packages?

As often as you want! We suggest sending 2-3 letters throughout the summer–one at the beginning to introduce yourself, one in the middle of the summer and one towards the end. Of course, the more the better! Care packages are welcome, too! Just be mindful of what you are sending. We ask if you send food that it is packaged well. Depending on the staffer’s schedule, it could sit in our office for a few days so we want to avoid it going bad and to avoid unwanted critters.

Some care package suggestions: coloring books, stickers, glow sticks, journaling supplies, books, t-shirts, etc.

How do I sign up to sponsor a staffer?

By filling out this Google Form, you can sign up to sponsor a staffer. We ask that all sponsors fill out the Google Form entirely. We ask for your email address so we can send you updates throughout the summer. We ask for your mailing address so staffers can send you mail and so that we can send you a thank you note.

Hopefully this  resource answered your questions about sponsoring a summer staffer! If not, feel free to email Paige. She handles all things staff sponsoring. We are so grateful for your support of our mission at Asbury Hills. Without your prayers and support, our ministry would not be possible.

Thank you for volunteering to sponsor a staffer!
